I can remember thinking about building a bass way back before I had even
bought my first one. I enjoy building things, so it always seemed like a
good idea. I decided just to buy myself an
inexpensive bass instead, though. It was probably a good decision at the time.
I've since upgraded to a nicer bass and defretted the old one, so it still gets some
use. :)
Well, about a year ago I was at a music festival, and we were
watching a really good band called "Art of Dying" The bassist had a really cool
looking bass. Its frets were angled. I noticed it immediately and pointed
it out to my friends, who probably didn't actually care much, but feigned
interest anyways. ;) It looked
like it would probably be a bit more comfortable to play. (It also sounded
really good, though the bassist should probably get the majority of the
credit for that).
A couple months ago, while following some random tangent
on the internet I came across dingwallguitars.com and saw the awesome basses
there. Sure enough, I looked back at my old photos, and there it was on the
headstock. I looked into it a bit, and decided that I really wanted one.
Unfortunately, their prices were a little (okay, a lot) out of my price range.
(I might be tempted when they come out with their Afterburner GL though)
I'm sure their current offerings well worth it if you've got the dough, but I didn't. I
thought maybe it's time to revisit the idea of building a bass. I've been
playing enough to know somewhat what I was looking for in a bass, so I
thought "Why not?"
